Is propfirm trading dead in 2026? The honest answer

What happened in the past 18 months

MyForexFunds, at one point the largest propfirm with €1 billion in revenue, closed in 2023 after SEC enforcement. Clients lost access to accounts.

FTMO tightened rules: max consistency rule, max single-day profit limits. Result: traders who used to be able to make 8% in one day now often have a rule violation.

Newer firms (5%ers, FundedNext) delayed or denied payouts on technicalities. Reddit is full of complaint threads.

The business model still works

Propfirms earn on evaluation fees, not on trader profits. 95% of challenge takers never pass evaluation. The 5% that do pass earn the firm a net loss but often lose the account after 2-3 payouts due to rule violations or wrong sizing.

For the firm: profitable model. For the trader: average loss of €200-500 in evaluation fees per successfully funded account.

When propfirm makes sense

If you can trade consistently (>3 months documented on your own account), have the rules internalized, and use it as leverage on your own capital.

Working example: trader has €5,000 own capital, makes 8% per month = €400. Plus 1 funded account of €100k at FTMO, conservative 4% per month = €4,000 profit, 80% payout = €3,200. Total €3,600 per month.

But: pays €600 per year in FTMO renewals, and must perform every month to keep the account. Bad month = account gone.

When it doesn't make sense

If you cannot yet earn consistently on your own account. A propfirm account doesn't suddenly make you a better trader, it puts you under pressure and that pressure costs you the account.

If you gamble on the challenge: 'if I pass, my life changes'. Statistically not a great plan.

Alternatives that work better in 2026
